What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine, also known as Regenerative and Anti-Aging Medicine is a medical specialty where the doctor looks at identifying and addressing the root causes of disease, rather than treating only the symptoms. The body is considered as an integrated whole rather than being divided into different medical specialties.

This is a more patient – centered approach in contrast to the traditional disease and symptom centric approach of Medicine. Functional Medicine specialists look at genetic, environmental and lifestyle interactions that influence long-term health and complex chronic disease.

As the picture of the iceberg shows, diseases like diabetes or heart disease may be what is visible above the surface, but the underlying cause could lie in specific imbalances in the body. Functional Medicine looks at achieving optimal health rather than relieving just the symptoms.
